For New Painters
Painting Guides
Beginner-friendly, step-by-step guides to help you pick up your brushes and finish your first miniature.
Essential Brushes & Paints
Before you paint, gather the basics. You do not need a huge collection to start — just the right few tools.
- 1One medium brush for basecoating broad areas.
- 2One fine detail brush for eyes, freehand, and trim.
- 3A starter set of 10–12 acrylic paints covering primary colors, black, white, and a metallic.
- 4A wet palette or a damp paper towel to keep paint workable.
Base Coating 101
The foundation of every miniature. Two thin coats always beat one thick one.
- 1Thin your paint slightly with water until it flows like milk.
- 2Apply the first coat — it will look streaky; that is expected.
- 3Let it dry fully, then apply a second thin coat for even coverage.
- 4Avoid pooling in recesses; wick excess away with your brush.
Layering & Highlights
Layering is how a flat mini comes to life — gradually lighter colors on raised surfaces.
- 1Mix a lighter shade of your base color (about 1:1 with white).
- 2Paint raised areas, leaving the darker base in the recesses.
- 3Add a final edge highlight of an even lighter tone on the sharpest points.
- 4Keep your brush strokes deliberate — less is more.
Sealing & Protecting Your Mini
A sealed miniature survives the table. Do not skip this final step.
- 1Let your paint fully cure for 24 hours.
- 2Choose a matte varnish to avoid unwanted shine.
- 3Apply two light, even coats — spray outdoors or in a ventilated area.
- 4Let it dry completely before basing or play.
